Earth Day 2024 - Planet vs Plastic

Interview with Beach Guardian founder and marine conservationist, Emily Stevenson.

Open to staff, students and the wider community.

Event details

To mark the end of our week of Earth Day activities, join us for an interview with ESI researcher and Beach Guardian founder, Emily Stevenson.

Passionate about protecting our coasts, Emily has been picking up plastic from our beaches since the age of 11. In 2018 she and her father founded Beach Guardian, a Community Interest Company which organises regular community beach cleans, school education activities, and encourages businesses to support local environmental initiatives. Since launch they have organised hundreds of beach cleans with thousands of hours of volunteering.

Emily is currently completing a PhD investigating microplastics as vectors for antimicrobial resistance in aquatic systems, jointly supervised by the University of Exeter, Cornwall and Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Emily’s research aims to investigate whether microplastics are important platforms for the growth, enrichment and dissemination of AMR biofilms, and whether there are associated ecological implications of microplastics, antimicrobials and AMR on the gut microbiota of marine organisms.

Emily is also an ambassador for: Plastic Oceans UK, Shark Trust, Clean Ocean App, Keep Britain Tidy, Big Blue Ocean Cleanup and MARINElife.

During our live chat with Emily there will be a chance to ask questions about what can be done and how you can make a difference.
